Obesity impacts millions of adults in the U.S. There is significant discussion on the value and costs associated with the coverage of weight-loss treatments as part of employee benefits. This study sought to describe the retention of employees with and without diagnosed obesity who are employed by self-insured employers.
The research, commissioned by Eli Lilly, used claims data from over 50 million commercially insured lives between 2014 and 2023 to describe employee retention. Our research suggests that employees diagnosed with obesity tend to stay with their employers significantly longer than those without such a diagnosis. This trend holds true across age groups, genders, industries, and regions, with even higher retention rates observed among employees with obesity-related comorbidities and those with dependents diagnosed with obesity.
